Tankard, drinking vessel for ale or beer, widely used in northern Europe (especially Scandinavia, Germany, and the British Isles) and in colonial America from the second half of the 16th century until the end of the 18th century.
The body is normally cylindrical, with a hinged lid (with or without finial), a thumbpiece, and a scroll-shaped handle. Whistles, which were used to summon waiters, can be seen on the handles of several 17th- and 18th-century tankards.
Tankards most often were made from precious metals, especially silver, and pewter.

Caring for Your Pewter
Caring for Your Pewter
To ensure your pewter item remains in pristine condition for years to come, please follow these simple care instructions:
- Cleaning: Pewter is a low-maintenance metal. Simply wash your item by hand in warm, soapy water using a mild washing-up liquid. Rinse it thoroughly and dry it immediately with a soft cloth to prevent water spots.
- Polishing: Unlike silver, pewter does not tarnish. It will develop a lovely, soft patina over time. You do not need to polish it, but if you want to restore its original shine, a non-abrasive metal polish can be used sparingly.
- What to Avoid: Never put pewter in the dishwasher, as the high temperatures and harsh detergents can damage the metal. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or steel wool, which can scratch the surface.
- Storage: Store your pewter in a clean, dry place away from direct sunlight or extreme temperatures.
